History of the house built around 1810 and owned until 1872 by Leonard Deming and his family, including details about him indicating that he was a colorful character. Most of the account concerns repairs and conversion to four apartments by Susan S. Peck in the late 1920s or early 1930s.

Susan Stowell (Brewster) Peck was the daughter of Henry and Charlotte (Stowell) Brewster of Middlebury. She married Joseph Alanson Peck (1874-1933, Middlebury College, Class of 1898) in 1901. They lived in New York City, but maintained ties to Middlebury; she owned the house on Washington Street in which she had grown up and much of this correspondence after the death of her husband was addressed to her there. Joseph and Susan Peck owned 29 Washington Street, where Susan had grown up. Joseph credits her interest in the neighborhood with the decision to purchase and renovate the house across the street. It is listed as 16 Washington Street in the Buildings Register of Robert Cushman and Norm Olmsted.
